Counterflow Open Circuit Cooling Tower

This series features a metal-cased counterflow open‑circuit cooling tower, widely used in industrial refrigeration, HVAC, and process cooling applications. The unit offers rugged construction and strong weather resistance, suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation. The tower incorporates a high‑quality metal casing for protective shielding, combined with counterflow heat exchange technology and an efficient spray‑fill system. Hot process water is cooled through a combination of evaporative heat dissipation and sensible heat exchange, enabling continuous recirculation and efficient water reuse. The metal casing delivers significant advantages in impact resistance, fire safety, and structural strength, making it particularly well suited for industrial environments with demanding equipment protection requirements. Specifications Heat capacity: 233 – 1,744 kW Flow rate: 176 – 1,321 gpm / 40 – 300 m³/h Configuration: Counterflow / Axial fan / Induced draft

How it works?

The counterflow open-circuit cooling tower operates on the principle of heat and mass exchange between water and air. Hot circulating water is evenly distributed by the top-mounted spray system, forming fine droplets or water films that fall vertically through the fill section. Meanwhile, an axial fan draws ambient air upward from the lower side or bottom of the tower, creating counterflow contact with the descending water. This opposing flow direction maintains a high temperature difference and extensive contact area between air and water, resulting in strong thermal performance. Within the fill zone, the water is spread into thin films, maximizing exposure to the rising air. Heat is removed through both sensible exchange (temperature difference) and latent exchange (evaporation of a portion of the water). The cooled water collects in the bottom basin for recirculation, while the saturated, heated air is discharged by the fan. An automatic make-up valve replenishes water as needed, and a bleed-off connection periodically removes concentrated water to help maintain water quality.

Structure & Characteristics

  • 1 、Fan:

Equipped with heavy-duty axial fans specifically designed for cooling tower applications. Blades are constructed of nylon or aluminum alloy, dynamically balanced for smooth operation, high airflow, and low noise levels.

  • 2 、Water Distribution System:

Utilizes a pressure-type distribution method with anti-clogging ABS basket-type nozzles that ensure uniform spray coverage without dead zones. The distribution piping is rationally arranged for low water pressure requirements, excellent spray performance, and resistance to fouling.

  • 3 、Fill:

Features high-efficiency PVC fill with a fluted sheet design that provides a large specific surface area and strong hydrophilicity, promoting thorough air-water heat exchange. The fill offers high flame retardancy, excellent temperature resistance, and an extended service life.

  • 4 、Drift Eliminator:

Positioned above the fill section and before the air outlet, constructed with high-efficiency curved baffles or honeycomb structures to effectively capture entrained water droplets from the air stream. Drift loss is minimized to below 0.01%, significantly reducing water waste.

  • 5 、Collection Basin:

Features a integrally molded bottom basin, constructed of the same material as the casing with ample capacity to ensure consistent water supply even during sudden flow fluctuations. The basin bottom includes a drain port and make-up water valve for convenient cleaning and maintenance.

  • 6 、Casing:

Manufactured from high-quality ZAM-coated steel or stainless steel sheets, precision-formed for flat, tightly fitted panels. The surface is treated with a hot-dip galvanizing process, providing superior corrosion protection and an attractive appearance.

  • 7 、Base Frame:

Serves as the foundation support for the entire tower, bearing the equipment weight and transferring it to the ground to ensure stable operation. Constructed from galvanized channel steel; stainless steel is available as an option for applications requiring additional corrosion protection in humid or chemically aggressive environments.
